CV Tips for Software Developers!

Here I’m going to share some tips that I have for Software Developers updating their CV’s and profiles for new opportunities in the market.  If you see anything below that you agree/disagree with or have any questions about please do let me know!

I’m very open to any ideas or extra tips I could add for my network!

1: Highlight your core tech stack.

A simple way to do this is to list the stack under a previous project and current projects that you have worked on.

Another way is to showcase your projects on GitHub or include a section within your CV where you can list courses, books and podcasts that you study, read or listen to. I would especially recommend this to any junior candidates.

A lot of companies now are interested in your involvement in the tech community. So if you attend any forums, webinars or conferences always include this in your CV even if it’s not focused around development, anything software or IT related.

2: Using Action verbs to demonstrate your experience.

Using these kind of words helps highlight your direct involvement within projects and exactly what you did within certain roles.

Putting example of what your involvement was and then what the actual outcome was will always strengthen your CV and will not leave any questions unanswered.

Examples include: “applied”, “improved”, and “implemented”.

3: Tailor your CV to the position you are applying for.

In some circumstances I understand this isn’t possible especially if you are applying for a high volume of jobs. However, through speaking with a number of hiring managers, a tailored CV is more likely to catch their eye just like a personalised Linkedin message could catch your eye more to go forward for a position.

4. Links to up to date profiles

Links to examples of projects or websites you have worked on will always help strengthen your profile and showcase your experience.

Be sure to include any links to accounts which show your experience outside of work or personal projects and interests, for example, a Github or Stack Overflow account.

Keeping your Linkedin account up to date and detailed is another good way to showcase your experience and what you are working on and also can be great if you don’t have a lot of detail in your CV.

5: Include your interests.

This gives your CV a more human element and can help hiring managers get an idea of your personality and persona.

Adding your interests can also give you something to talk about during your interview and can sometimes soften more formal interviews.

It gets across your personality! You don’t have to have the most interesting hobbies like jet skiing or paragliding but anything such as your favourite film can help personalise your CV.

I hope this has been helpful and I would love to hear more top tips and feedback!

I welcome to opportunity to speak more about this, whether you would like to meet for a coffee and find out more! Or if you are a client looking for passionate manual testers wanting to transition, get in touch!
