This week has been busy for me, both in and out of work. From being busy in the office to picking up new languages/projects at home, plus attending events ….. I am ready for the weekend! So before I crash for a 12 hr nap, here’s my journey of what I learnt this week.

FE vs BE

So far I’ve been self-teaching C#, HTML and recently looked at SQL, but I’ve been curious to explore the realm of front-end as I’ve only briefly looked into FE and never really explored more. Keen to investigate, I opened up SoloLearn, grabbed my laptop and downloaded VisualStudio (again) with JavaScript added in and got to work.

I found the layout simple enough to grasp, but changing the language was where I struggled. I am NOT a great coder, I wouldn’t even call myself good, but I love creating a concept/task to achieve and finding a solution. It is another puzzle to solve, no matter how long (and how many YouTube tutorials) it takes. I have one simple task – Create a logo in a box! Not that hard….or so I thought.

Tools I used

One thing I found I struggled with was finding the time to work during the week…and then I found CodePen. I FELL for this website and have been using it in my lunches, when I get that chance. It helped me grasp how JS, HTML and CSS working together, whilst seeing what they each contribute to the end product.

As you can see from my result so far, I am miles away from getting towards what I thought was a simple task. I have put below the image I was trying to recreate (emogi), as you can see they are by no means similar however god loves a trier and I will keep on giving it a go J

This is something that will take me time to perfect, and any help is happily welcomed, but I’m excited to see how close I can get my project, if not make it better.

Leeds Front End

Another way I worked on my knowledge of front end was by attending the Leeds Front End event on Thursday. Organised by @Naomi and @Rachel, this event is aimed to bring together those who are passionate about front end development and share ideas and talk around topics within front end. This event helped me with my understanding of how different tech works together and the involvement of UI/UX within the development stages.

@Luke gave a very interesting talk, ‘Painting with Pixels’, where he delved into Web Bluetooth and gave a demonstration (which was very fun to play with!) and @Stephanie gave a great talk on how UI/UX Designers and Developers are able to work together to achieve outstanding products/servcies. Both talks were interesting to listen to, made the room laugh, contained some interesting images (fork emogi) and helped me with my understanding of Front End. Such a great event and I cannot wait for the next.

So, over the course of this week, I took a step away from my curiosity of Back End and was very glad I explored the realm of Front End. I look forward to getting my logo cleaned up (well, at least get the image to look similar to the original) and explore adding this image to a program/application I hope I can push myself to work on very soon.

If anyone has any pointers (or overall guidance) to help me with my shody logo then feel free to reach out, I’m desperate for help at this point! Thanks for reading until next week …..
