The landscape of Recruitment is constantly changing and so are the ways Recruiters and Hiring Managers look at CVs – as well as specifically what they are looking for. I have created a list of points to keep in mind when creating/updating your CV. This list highlights key questions we are asked by our clients when we have submitted CVs and what they are keen to see when they receive an application.
Who
- Who were you working for, whether that’s the company, an end-client or just a project that was created by a work colleague.
- Who were you reporting into – i.e. Senior Developer, Lead Developer, Scrum Master, etc.?
- Who were you managing – i.e. a team, junior developers, mentoring interns, etc.?
- Who did you work with on a day-to-day basis – i.e. who sat in your team (e.g. team of 8 – 4 Developers, 2 BAs, 2 Testers), did you work independently, etc.?
What
- What did you do on a day-to-day basis?
- What were your key responsibilities?
- What are your key achievements – what are you proud of?
- What did the company do?
- What was the project?
- What tech did you use?
- What methodologies or principles did you adopt/work within?
- What interested you within the project?
- What did you contribute as an individual?
Where
- Where were you based?
- Where (Company wise) were you when you worked with specific tech?
- Where did you study?
- Where did you sit in the team?
- Where were you involved in meetings?
- Where did you pick up new skills?
- Where did you work proactively?
- Where did you first take a leadership/mentoring role?
When
- When were you working there?
- When was the project live?
- When was the project implemented?
- When did you start/leave previous roles?
- When did you study?
- When did you use specific tech?
Why
- Why did you use a specific tech?
- Why did you adopt certain methodologies/principles?
- Why did you take a specific approach to a project?
- Why did you bring in new tech?
- Why was it relevant to the project?
- Why did you study that particular course?
My clients are keen to see WHO you are and WHAT you have done, not a job description from your current role. Always make sure you are covering how YOU contributed and how YOU stand out from the other applicants – bring your CV to life and stand out from the completion!
I hope this has been helpful and I would love to hear more tips and feedback! I welcome to opportunity to speak more about this, whether you would like to meet for a coffee and discuss your CV or any assistance we can offer!
