Is Switzerland the next big tech hub?

The 2021 Global Innovation Index of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranked Switzerland as the world’s most innovative economy for the 11th time in a row.

Switzerland is a highly industrialized technology location, where innovators have first-hand access to new technologies and research. New applications can be quickly introduced to the entirety of Europe because of Switzerland’s central location. The country has always been quick to utilize new technologies to create robust innovation across various industries, from financial services to healthcare and life sciences.

Switzerland doesn’t necessarily have more tech geniuses per capita, but a few points set it apart from other tech ecosystems. Interestingly, small and middle-size enterprises, including startups, play an important role in the economy, and the proximity between higher education institutions, research, and industry is a contributing factor.

In 2019 Switzerland attracted $ 445 million of investments. The rapid growth of the Swiss startup ecosystem is a phenomenon on its own and no longer an exception. Leading the way in the Greater Zurich Area, one of the most advanced technologies and industrial regions in Europe. The Zurich tech scene is home to a range of startups, particularly those focusing on fintech, crypto and blockchain technology.

One of European tech’s greatest strengths is its deep talent pool, the report notes, which is more distributed and more interconnected than ever, with some 5.7 million professional developers. Switzerland has become a tech hub paradise with its ever-expanding pool of developers and software companies.

I’m incredibly proud to work with innovating market-leading tech businesses in Switzerland. There is a real rich mix of innovation, entrepreneurialism, local talent, investment and the infrastructure to support a prosperous tech hub. Still, now the challenge is about how to create true global leaders in the region. I believe that in a few years, Switzerland has both the potential and a unique opportunity to become one of the most prosperous tech hubs in the world.
