The cybersecurity talent shortage in 2023.

The cybersecurity talent shortage is no secret. This year, the employment gap in the U.S. jumped 40% to 700,000, and research says global openings will reach 3.5 million in 2025.

The demand for cybersecurity is more significant than ever due to an evolving threat landscape with more difficult-to-detect and defend attacks.

The global cybersecurity workforce grew to encompass 4.7 million people, reaching its highest-ever levels, according to (ISC)2 2022 workforce study.

This is encouraging news; however, the same study found that there is still a need for more than 3.4 million security professionals, an increase of over 26% from 2021.

Each year the cyber talent gap is increasing, and we must take action to ensure we develop and encourage talent to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

I feel that many organisations are looking for unicorns — candidates who can check off every box on the application form and are missing out on great adaptable talent that could thrive in that position.

My advice to any organisation looking to grow its cybersecurity staff would be to look for valuable soft skills, which tend to come naturally rather than through classroom education. Technical skills can often be taught; this would encourage more motivated individuals to leap into the cyber landscape.

High adaptability and a proactive mindset with this mix of technical and soft skills are crucial in the cyber industry. While individuals may be talented in one niche, they will eventually be asked to perform new duties as technologies emerge.

For example, a new hire may have experience in cloud security, but working in the cloud is rapidly expanding to include areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and IoT. Businesses need to consider an individual’s adaptability and flexibility when handling technical issues.
