Finding a remote role can be challenging. Many organisations are approaching a hybrid working environment or full-time back into the office. Whether you want a permanently remote job or a remote job right now, there can be lots of competition and bagging a fully remote job can be tricky.
Like any application, when applying for your dream role and perhaps your next step in your career, you want yours to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Here I provide seven steps on how you can make your job application stand out…
Outline your experience.
Have you worked remotely before? If so, that’s something you should highlight in your application. It’s a great way to signal to the employer that you aren’t just trying out remote work—you really love it, and it works for you.
If you haven’t worked remotely but have worked in teams where others were remote, highlight how you collaborate virtually.
Show that you’re manageable from a distance.
I speak to hiring managers to daily; I know many want to see that you have the technical and soft skills to be an effective remote worker. Highlight previous tasks or projects where you worked well independently and collaborated seamlessly online. Or, if you’re applying for a management position, you’ll want to distinguish how you set expectations and monitor progress with employees you oversee from afar.
Emphasise tangible results and skills
Your manager can’t see you working in a remote work environment, so they can only judge you based on your output. Your application, therefore, needs to be heavy on tangible outcomes – e.g., specific results that you achieved for past employers and relevant skills that can easily be verified with work samples.
Demonstrate a genuine interest in the work – not just the work arrangement
In addition to letting the hiring manager know that you can do the work, you also want them to know that you want to do the job. You don’t want your dream company to think you’re applying just because you want to work from home. The arrangement benefits you, and you want your application to focus on what benefits your prospective employer.
Ace the Interview
Finally, of course, ace the interview. In many respects, a remote interview is no different than an in-person one. You’ll still dress your best and prepare yourself, particularly if a task in involved; you need to ensure you shine.
However, unlike an in-person interview, you’ll likely be at home. So, ensure you have a fantastic remote interview spot for the event. If you don’t have a dedicated home office, find someplace that’s quiet and well-lit. Also, test your tech before the big day. Ensure your software is current and can use whatever platform the company interviews on.
